Course Overview: Implementing a balanced literacy program by teaching high school students the basic skills with the context of rich
and varied reading and writing experiences. Special emphasis will be given to oral language, phonemic awareness, and concepts of print, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development. The course will also include word identification, vocabulary, comprehension, diagnosis, programs, pleasure reading, and content area building. This course is to be taken in conjunction with regular language arts classes, individualized, and based on needs of placement. The students are generally 9th and 10th graders and should be preapproved for participation for reading support strategies.
