What do pillbugs like?

Materials:  Shallow pan, dry soil, water, pillbugs, black construction paper

Pillbugs live in damp, dark places. Demonstrate this preference. Fill the shallow pan almost full with dry soil. Carefully moisten the soil on one half of the pan. Place the pillbugs in the pan, evenly distributed on both sides of the pan. Place the pan in a dark place and leave it undisturbed for 15–20 minutes. Pull the pan out and observe where the pillbugs are.

Now, moisten the other half of the pan of soil so that both sides are moist. Place the black construction paper over one half of the pan. Leave for 15–20 minutes. Check the pan to see where the pillbugs are.
