Talking Points

talking pointsWhen reading some material which will be discussed in class:

  1. Give students several "Post-It" notes. The new strip notes work well for this. Have the students put one of the symbols from the list below on each strip.

«  This is new information. I want to remember this!
+  This reminds me of something
ü  This is something I already know
     ?  I don't understand this
      !  This is interesting!

  2. As they are reading, an appropriate Post-It note can be stuck on the page to help them locate the material they would like to discuss.
  3. After reading, small group discussion can be used to share insights and clear up confusion.
  4. The discussion group should label some items that they would like to discuss with the entire class during the large group discussion.
