Dean Friesen

Are you new to Roseburg? I've lived in Roseburg for 9 years.
How long have you been teaching? I taught for 18 years including 1 year in The Dalles, 9 years in Burns, 4 years in Sweet Home, and 4 years in Sutherlin (most recently).
What do you like most about teaching? Teaching is a "calling," like a way of life for me. You have to want students to be successful and love the process of them gaining confidence and in this case, getting addicted to singing. When choirs are working like a team and rehearsals/performances have synergy (the combined energy of a group that is greater than the sum of the whole), I am euphoric.
What was your favorite subject in school? Favorite subject in high school and college was singing, but I had a history teacher my senior year at Newberg High school who really made the subject come to life. There was also that stint in shop class in middle school that was a blast.
How did you get started in teaching? Graduated from George Fox College (now a university) in 1980 with a Music Ed degree but wasn't feeling the "call" yet. It was the degree that fit my talents and experience the most (my father is a college choir director). I was an assistant manager of a grocery chain for 3 years, then moved to Central Oregon (Grass Valley) to farm with my inlaws for 4 years. During the winters there, we had several months of downtime due to the weather. I started substitute teaching and realized that this was really what I wanted to do. At 29 years of age, I started teaching full time at an elementary school. I knew this wasn't for me.....I got tired of hearing myself teach the same music lesson for the third time that day and would frequently forget whether I'd covered everything with each class or not.
Do you have any pets? What kind? Becky and I have a black lab named Maggie. She's 4 years old and likes to hunt birds with me.
Do you have a favorite superhero? I really don't have a favorite superhero, but one of my favorite quotes comes from the movie "Braveheart" and goes something like "All men die; few men ever really live."
