Summer projects help keep aging buildings safe, operational as district plans long term

While classrooms were quieter this summer, work across Roseburg Schools was anything but.

District maintenance crews and local contractors tackled projects throughout the district, from roofing and flooring to HVAC and lighting, alongside routine summer maintenance.

With schools averaging about 77 years old, maintaining them requires ongoing attention. Many people may not realize that major school renovations and new buildings are generally funded through voter-approved bonds. Without bond funding, Roseburg Schools relies on grants and General Fund dollars that also support day-to-day school operations. Summer projects help extend the life of existing buildings and keep schools safe and operating.

Maintaining what we have is only part of the district’s facilities work. These projects address immediate needs while the district plans for the larger investments our aging schools will require.

SUMMER PROJECT TOTAL: 

APPROXIMATELY $1.08 MILLION invested in school facilities this summer. 

GRANT-FUNDED: Eastwood Elementary received a campus-wide LED lighting upgrade this summer valued at approximately $50,000 through the Energy Trust of Oregon.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Community Facilities Advisory Committee spent last school year studying district facilities and long-term needs. The group’s recommendations are helping inform decisions about how the district can best use its schools and resources.

Winchester Elementary School

• Asbestos abatement* and new flooring in 3 classrooms
• New HVAC units in 3 classrooms and 2 offices
• Hazard tree removal

Fullerton IV Elementary School

• Asbestos abatement* in 5 classrooms and polished concrete floors

Melrose Elementary School

• New roofs on kindergarten and main buildings

Sunnyslope Elementary School

• New wood-chip fall protection at north playground

Roseburg High School

• New flooring in 6 restrooms
• New entrance mats
• HVAC control upgrades in Student Center
• Gym access-control system
• Privacy changing and showering stations in both locker rooms

Central Office

• New roofs on Central Office, warehouse, and Student Services
• Warehouse dock overhang removed; replacement pending

Joseph Lane Middle School

• Media center siding replacement
• Main building exterior painted
• Field drainage and hazard clearing
• Coming up: athletic complex fencing, additional paved play area and replacement path to athletic field

Fremont Middle School

• Roof cleaned and moss removed to extend roof life
• Coming up: additional paved play area

* The district follows required asbestos-management procedures, including regular inspections and safe removal.
