Savannah Kempton – Growing Her Future in Forestry

Savannah Kempton, a 2024 graduate of Roseburg High School, is thriving in the field of forestry right here in Douglas County.
While at RHS, Savannah discovered her passion through agriculture and natural resources classes, especially the Forestry and Natural Resources course. Joining FFA in her sophomore year was a turning point, thanks to the encouragement of agriculture teacher Cailey Powell.
“She pushed me to try my best,” Savannah said. “She mentioned the Forestry Career Development Event (CDE), and that truly opened my eyes to my career path.”
Savannah set a goal with Powell to place in the top 10 at the district level — and accomplished it. With continued support and encouragement, she went on to win state and compete nationally. “Those opportunities are the reason I chose forestry, but also the support from Powell,” she said. “I got to compete nationally — never thought that would happen, but thanks to Powell, it did.”
Now a student at Umpqua Community College, Savannah has explored the forestry field through ride-alongs and by connecting with professionals from the Bureau of Land Management, Douglas Forest Protective Association, the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, and other agencies. These experiences gave her insight into different fields within forestry, from daily responsibilities to tools, rules and paperwork. Her willingness to reach out and learn directly from professionals helped her secure a forestry internship this summer with the Cow Creek Tribe.
“In Roseburg there is a wide range of opportunities to grow in forestry,” she said.
Savannah credits her high school experience, and especially the mentorship of Mrs. Powell, for shaping her future. “As we prepared for state, she poured a lot into us, giving us our opportunity to showcase our skills. And we won state that year!”
Powell’s influence didn’t end at graduation. “She truly is my inspiration, and has been a huge supporter of my journey through college,” Savannah shared.
Her advice to students: “You must explore careers and step out of your comfort zone in order to find what you love.
