Ashley Backen – Leading with Purpose at Roseburg Forest Products

Ashley Backen, a 2015 Roseburg High School graduate, is now the Technical Manager at RFP Dillard Lumber. In her role, she oversees quality across the entire operation, from the log yard to shipping.
“One of the best parts of my job is the team I get to work with,” Ashley said. “We strike a great balance between getting things done and having fun while doing it. The variety in my role keeps every day fresh and exciting.”
Ashley’s day-to-day involves identifying issues, analyzing data, and supporting her team in making informed decisions. The fast-paced environment challenges her in the best way.
After graduating from RHS, Ashley attended Umpqua Community College, where she played basketball and participated in the Dual Partnership Program with Oregon State University to study forestry.
“I highly recommend UCC,” she said. “The instructors are deeply committed to your education and genuinely care about your future. It was an awesome place to grow both academically and personally.”
Ashley is also a strong example of local career growth. Roseburg Forest Products has provided training opportunities and supported her advancement into leadership.
“Roseburg Forest Products has been fantastic about identifying talent and giving people the chance to prove themselves.” she said. “I've had the opportunity to attend a variety of training courses, from interpersonal communication to advanced statistical methods, all sponsored by the company. RFP offers clear and meaningful paths for growth for those looking to advance their career.”
Ashley credits several RHS teachers and coaches for helping shape her into who she is today.
“They pushed me out of my comfort zone, modeled strong leadership, instilled a solid work ethic, and showed me how to bounce back from failure,” she said. “Even when those moments felt small at the time, they had a lasting impact on my path forward.”
Her advice to students: “Success doesn’t follow one set path. Whether you choose college or take another route, what really matters is your mindset. For me, it came down to showing up, being dependable, and being ready to put in the work, day in and day out. A strong work ethic will take you far, no matter the field.”
Why stay in Roseburg? For Ashley, the answer is simple.
“Roseburg has always been home. It's easy to overlook just how beautiful this area is until you've been away and come back. Sure, we might not have the flashy appeal of big cities, but we’ve got amazing forests, great weather, and let’s be honest, when your worst traffic is Garden Valley at 5 PM, that’s a win. It’s a great place to live, work, and build a life.”
