Last month I shared with you how our school district is building pathways for students to grow here, learn here and work here. Our students can follow paths that lead directly from Roseburg High School and Umpqua Community College to family-wage local careers. And for those who pursue higher education beyond Roseburg, we want them to know this community welcomes them back with meaningful, well-paying career opportunities waiting here at home.
The amount of talent our students possess is incredible. As a community, we can develop and harness this deep pool of potential, ensuring our students thrive while securing the future success of Roseburg. I hear stories all the time about our incredible students. From flight attendants praising our traveling RHS band members to medical staff collaborating with our nursing students — “respectful,” “responsible” and “capable” are common descriptions.
History shows that communities thrive when they invest in their young people. Roseburg is no different.
That’s why our schools help develop these character traits and skills in our students from a young age. We provide opportunities for leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving while holding them accountable for their learning. We ensure that schoolwork is both challenging and engaging. Our educators help our students take responsibility for their education and create lessons that help students prepare for life after graduation.
Our students are proving every day that they have what it takes to meet the high expectations of not only our school district, but also our community. And they deserve the support of all of us. I am so grateful for our community partners, from service providers to industry leaders, who show up for our students. For volunteers who visit our schools to read with students, and our local businesses who open their doors for field trips. It’s truly remarkable how this community rallies around children, and I encourage everyone to continue cheering on our students.
Every student deserves a cheerleader, because every student is capable of success. Regardless of hardships students may face outside of school, we have a dedicated staff ready to meet the individual needs of all learners. Ensuring all students have access to this support is crucial.
With that in mind, our district and schools are always working to improve our service to students and families. And we need your help to do that. Our schools must reflect the values and goals of our community, which is why I am asking for your input. Please take a moment to fill out this brief survey to let us know what we’re doing well and where we can improve. I’d love to hear from everyone, from parents and staff to community members and students. Feel free to share this survey link with others, including with your children if they attend our schools.
I am so grateful for our community’s ongoing support, and I encourage everyone to get involved. Attend a baseball or softball game. Volunteer in a classroom. Watch a band or theater performance. We’ve got great things happening here, and it makes me excited for the future of our students and our community.
Sincerely,
Jared Cordon
Superintendent
Roseburg School District
