Meet October's Exceptional Student Award winners
Meet our October Exceptional Student Award winners!
Congratulations, Hunter S. Smith, fifth-grader at Sunnyslope Elementary; Eden Barton, an eighth-grader at Jo Lane Middle School; Evangeline “Evvy” Sears, a junior at Roseburg High School; and Calvin Sears, a senior at RHS.
Each month, students are chosen by their schools to be honored at our School Board meetings. Students may be recognized for a variety of achievements and successes such as academics, community-mindedness, character, positive influence, and extracurriculars.
Here’s what their schools had to say:
Hunter is a bright, kind, and hardworking fifth-grader at Sunnyslope Elementary who truly shines. He greets staff with a smile, compliment, or handshake each day, spreading positivity throughout the school. Hunter is always helpful, taking on tasks that support our whole community, and he consistently goes above and beyond for others. His upbeat attitude, love for learning — especially math — and his special affinity for bridges show his extraordinary curiosity. Since kindergarten, Hunter has been a shining example of kindness, respect, and leadership, making Sunnyslope a better place for both students and staff.
Eden is not only an incredible musician, singer, actress, exemplary student, and natural leader, but she is also kind, and her kindness toward others is her most powerful asset. She is hardworking, dedicated, and a huge support for those around her. Her presence is a light, her energy is infectious, and her kindness, respect, and talent shine every day. As one teacher shared, “She is that person who teaches others kindness by being the example.” Eden stays focused, works with positive energy, and helps others. She is truly a wonderful student whose light inspires everyone around her.
Evangeline brings warmth, positivity, and curiosity to every space she enters. In both concert and marching band, she shines as a thoughtful, hardworking musician who uplifts those around her. In class discussions, she is often the first to raise her hand, sharing eloquent insights and listening deeply to others’ perspectives. Outside the classroom, her kind greetings and genuine interest in people brighten hallways and make others feel seen. She is deeply curious about the world and the way people think, and she channels that curiosity into service and encouragement for her peers.
Calvin is a consistently calm, focused, and positive presence in all his classes. Never afraid to try new things, he recently transitioned from Tenor Sax to Percussion and is excelling with determination and skill. He strikes a great balance between being serious and attentive, while still knowing how to laugh and enjoy the process with his peers. Calvin's hardworking nature, thoughtful questions, and kind demeanor make him a role model for others. Calvin’s positivity and good attitude inspire those around him to do their best.
