Meet December’s Exceptional Student Award winners

Congratulations to Lian Lininger, a fifth-grader at Fir Grove Elementary School; Margaret "Maggie" Kilby, an eighth-grader at Jo Lane Middle School; Sophia McLaughlin, a ninth-grader at Roseburg High School; and Cohen Blemmel-Berry, a senior at RHS.
Each month, students are chosen by their schools to be honored at our School Board meetings. Students may be recognized for a variety of achievements and successes such as academics, community-mindedness, character, positive influence, and extracurriculars.
Here’s what their schools had to say:
Lian is an amazing student, friend, and classmate. He is inquisitive, friendly, witty, and loves to learn. He can easily work with any other student and always seems to have a great attitude. He is a skilled reader who has recently discovered Percy Jackson. He is currently creating a report about the Aztec civilization to share with the class. Every day Lian impresses his teachers and peers with his simple kindness and complex thinking. He is a cherished member of the school community and an active member in the Garden Club. Congratulations, Lian! Fir Grove is incredibly proud of this Fir Grove Falcon!
Maggie is hard-working, diligent, and always trying her best. Teachers describe her as kind, thoughtful, inclusive, polite, sweet, and friendly to everyone around her. She isn’t afraid to ask for help, is always willing to help anyone anytime, and brings a personable, funny presence to the classroom. Maggie is a joy to have in class, quietly working hard and getting better, a testament to dedication, consistency, and the excellence those actions produce. She pays attention, is productive, wears a smile, and carries a can-do attitude. Over the last three years, she has transformed into a confident, cheerful, and positive role model who has been fantastic for the school. She is very deserving of this award.
Sophia is a passionate, hardworking student who consistently strives to perform at her highest level. She extends class discussions with thoughtful questions and responses, and she willingly supports classmates to ensure everyone understands the material. A conscientious leader, she checks her work carefully, participates actively, and maintains exceptional organization with no missing assignments. Sophia models excellence through persistence and respectful interactions. Beyond the classroom, she is a reliable FCCLA member, volunteers in the community, and works weekly in our coffee shop. Her positivity, consistency, and dedication make her a true joy to teach.
Cohen is an active, engaged student who consistently contributes thoughtful responses and supports those around him. He brings a strong work ethic and reliability to every setting, whether in class, band, or his many extracurricular activities. Cohen is also excelling in the RHS EMT program with UCC, where his instructor notes his outstanding performance. Cohen works well with others, stays focused, and brings positive energy to the classroom. He’s the kind of student who helps guide others whenever they need help. Cohen is a model student.
