Staff honored with March Crystal Apple awards
Congratulations to Jamie Rogers, seventh-grade Language Arts teacher at Joseph Lane Middle School; Darci Folsom, Instructional Assistant III in the Secondary Resource Center at Jo Lane; Erik Kjensrud, fourth-grade teacher at Eastwood Elementary School; and Shanna Pelke, office manager at Eastwood. These employees were presented with Crystal Apple Awards at the March 11 School Board meeting.
Here’s what their leaders had to say:
Jamie is a passionate advocate for every student in her classroom, demonstrating dedication, compassion, and a strong commitment to ensuring that all students feel supported and have the opportunity to succeed. A brilliant, empathetic, loving, and extremely caring educator, she challenges students’ thinking while encouraging creativity, a love for the craft of writing, and joy of reading. Jamie is organized, innovative, hard-working, and constantly refining her craft to improve instruction. She masterfully challenges students from a range of abilities and motivates learning through movement and performance. A powerhouse educator and steadfast advocate for all students, she leads with dedication, reliability, and energy.
Darci exemplifies dedication, professionalism, and heart in everything she does. Her compassion and unwavering dedication to students shine in the supportive and structured environment she creates, where students feel valued and capable. Known affectionately by students as “auntie,” she is kind, caring, and builds strong, trusting relationships with those in her care. Darci has stepped up in a time of need, confidently assuming the role of lead teacher and ensuring continuity of learning. Her collaboration with staff and willingness to help others strengthen the entire school community, and her commitment and leadership truly embody the spirit of this recognition.
With this Crystal Apple award, the opportunity is given to shine a light on someone who sometimes works in the shadows. Erik, known to many students as Mr. K, will appreciate the Batman reference as a talented artist who has brought his classroom to life with superhero murals and one-of-a-kind paintings. Students frequently name him among their favorite teachers and speak about him with clear respect. He builds strong rapport and meaningful connections with each and every student, helping them thrive. When working through challenges with students, he focuses on building rapport and connection. His efforts are seen and appreciated, and they make Eastwood a better place.
Shanna has served Eastwood Elementary since 2018, and her positive impact on the school is far reaching. You will often find her at school earlier and later than most, taking projects home on the weekends, volunteering as needed, and ensuring Eastwood can operate each day to serve the school community. She knows students by name and often knows valuable information about their families as well. Shanna pursues new opportunities for student enrichment, including initiating OMSI planetarium visits and a family science night. As an office manager, she anticipates problems, finds solutions, and looks ahead for the next. Her day to day support is unmatched, and her presence makes Eastwood a better place.
