Meet the March Exceptional Student Award winners
Congratulations to Asra Salihi, fifth-grade student at Eastwood Elementary School; Chanelle Angelene Dela Cruz, seventh-grader at Joseph Lane Middle School; Hailey Maxwell, ninth-grader at Roseburg High School; and Madison Hoschouer, senior at RHS. These students were recognized with Exceptional Student Awards at our February School Board meeting.
Each month, students are chosen by their schools to be honored at our School Board meetings. Students may be recognized for a variety of achievements and successes such as academics, community-mindedness, character, positive influence, and extracurriculars.
Here’s what their schools had to say:
Asra is a quiet force who is grounded with a resilient humility, which is evident in all she does. She has a heart of compassion and kindness for all and is an includer of others. She demonstrates a servant-hearted attitude and is willing to take on challenges that require resourceful problem-solving skills. Asra sets high goals for herself academically and possesses an impeccable work ethic. She doesn’t shy away from a challenge and is willing to try just about anything as she works toward meeting goals. Some concepts in fifth grade are tricky, but Asra faces them with a growth mindset and is willing to take risks in class. She not only shines brightly in the classroom, but on the soccer field and in completing very challenging jigsaw puzzles! Eastwood is very proud of her.
Chanelle approaches school with a sense of purpose that is rare and refreshing. Her passion for learning is thoughtful and intentional, guided by a strong inner compass and genuine curiosity. She asks questions to better understand and eagerly stretches her thinking, embracing learning as a process rather than simply a result. Chanelle carries herself with quiet confidence, integrity, and kindness. She is sincere in her interactions, consistently demonstrating respect for others and for the community she belongs to. She collaborates well with peers of all personalities and contributes thoughtfully. Chanelle is the kind of student who elevates a learning environment simply by being present, with a positive attitude and a smile.
Hailey is an exceptional student whose leadership, enthusiasm, and positivity make her stand out in every setting. She naturally takes initiative, whether leading warmups in PE or encouraging classmates to participate and succeed. Hailey pushes herself to do her best, approaches challenges with enthusiasm, and is always willing to share her thinking, even when she is still working through an idea. She is a supportive and positive teammate who helps others without judgment. Highly involved in school, Hailey regularly volunteers through FCCLA and participates in many activities. Her strong work ethic, professionalism, and goal-oriented mindset make her a wonderful role model and
a joy to have in class.
Madison is an outstanding student. As a sophomore, Madie immediately stood out as a scholar, demonstrating strong academic skills, leadership potential, and confidence. Over time, those qualities have continued to grow. By her senior year, she has developed into a mature, driven young adult who is ready to contribute positively to society. Madison is an enthusiastic participant who brings a positive attitude to learning, asks thoughtful questions, and works hard with genuine passion for her work. Currently excelling in Anatomy & Physiology and Medical Terminology, she continues to demonstrate determination and leadership. Her kindness, energy, and commitment make her highly deserving of recognition as Student of the Month.
